Scottish Gas Network has sent the following update about the ongoing road closure on Speldhurst Road, Southborough:

Urgent work to replace a section of our network in the Speldhurst Road area is ongoing. This work is essential to ensuring local properties continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas for many years to come.

Next week, we need to carry out overnight works in A26 St John’s Road. From 7pm on Monday 12 December until 6am on Tuesday 13 December, temporary traffic lights will be installed along the A26 near to its junction with Speldhurst Road, allowing us to safely carry out our work here. These lights will replace the existing traffic light system and will be manually operated to manage traffic flow. This procedure will be repeated from 7pm on Tuesday 13 December until 6am on Wednesday 14 December. We may need to suspend bus stops around our site and signed directions to the nearest alternatives will be provided.

Speldhurst Road remains closed to motorists between Charles Street and A26 St John’s Road for safety. A signed diversion route via Kibbles Lane, Holden Road and A26 St John’s Road is in place.

We’re working as quickly and safely as possible to complete this essential work in Speldhurst Road. However, this section of our network needs specialist equipment and pipe to be fitted to meet current network demands.

As a result, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to complete this work prior to Christmas. To help minimise disruption over the festive period, we will be suspending our work, enabling us to safely reopen Speldhurst Road, on Friday 23 December. Our engineers will return on Tuesday 3 January to complete the remaining work between Reynolds Lane and Charles Street, and the closure of Speldhurst Road will be reintroduced.

We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating. We’d like to thank road users, residents and businesses for their continued patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work.

We'll continue to provide updates on our progress here https://www.sgn.co.uk/our-gas-works/roadworks-your-area
