We have had several reports from residents about Cameroon sheep in the road on the A264/ Groombridge Hill. The same sheep have also been spotted in fields and gardens around Broom Lane and Holmewood Ridge. Naturally, there has been concern about their safety and the safety of drivers attempting to navigate around them.

We have now been in touch with the farmer who found that they had 'inherited' these sheep. They say there is a group of up to 20 Cameroons that escaped from Groombridge Place some time ago. Despite the sheep not being their formal responsibility, they are taking every opportunity to secure them. So far they've recovered 5; the others have become skilled at avoiding capture.

We understand that Groombridge Place is being re-fenced but that this of course takes time. However, the farmer has identified a field where the 'wild' Cameroons graze from time to time and this is being prepared as a trap so that when the sheep are seen in the field, the new gate can be closed and they can be rounded up and secured. The fencing should be finished by the end of this week and if the sheep do not find their way to the field, they can be driven down there. This will be an opportunity for anyone who wants to help to get involved.

The farmer adds that they are aware the sheep are ranging across the A264 between the allotments and stone cottages. They suggested to the police that they put up a temporary sign warning 'Sheep on Road' but this hasn't yet happened. We have contacted the police today to see if we can hurry this up, although it might be that the sheep are secured before the sign is.

We really appreciate the efforts of this local farmer to safely return the sheep to their field. We have no doubt that they are already busy enough with their day to day farming. Thank you also to those residents who have helped herd the strays into their own fields for safekeeping. Let's hope for a positive outcome before too long.
